“Assessment of Student Learning Development Grants”

 

These Grants are for:

·         Departments that want to design and implement assessment plans

·         Faculty who want to integrate assessment of student learning into their teaching

Proposals are due by 5p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2000

 This year the Provost’s Office in conjunction with the Office for Assessment of Student Learning will award grants to departments, programs, and individuals for the development and implementation of assessment plans. The awards will range from $500 for individual faculty grants for classroom-based assessment proposals up to $4,000 for comprehensive departmental and programmatic assessment plans. Proposals will be reviewed and recommendations made by the Assessment Advisory Committee. Grants will be awarded by the Provost. Preference will be given to proposals which have the potential to have the greatest impact on improving student learning. Typical projects might include the following:

Types of Awards

·         Individual Departmental/Programmatic Assessment. These include development and implementation of plans for the entire curriculum or for specific components. Emphasis should be on student learning outcomes. Funds can be used for planning, initiating plans, and long-term implementation.

·         Inter-/multidisciplinary Assessment. These projects include large scale, cross-disciplinary programs, such as MCRC, Liberal Studies, General Education, Service Learning, Distance Learning, and Honors programs. Emphasis should be on student learning outcomes. Funds can be used for developing and initiating plans, and for long-term implementation.

·         Individual Faculty Projects. These include development of quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies for individual courses or improving existing assessment strategies for the purpose of enhancing student learning.

Criteria:

Preference will be given to proposals which have the greatest potential for improving student learning. Consideration will be given to the following:

·         Clarity and significance of the proposal’s goals and objectives.

·         Impact on student learning.

·         Ability to serve as a model for other campus projects.

·         Ability to be completed successfully within the timelines proposed.

·         Long-term viability for the implementation of the proposal.

Reporting Requirement:

A report indicating progress toward the goals and objectives shall be filled with the Coordinator of Assessment two weeks prior to the end of each semester until the plan is implemented. A final report shall be submitted to the Provost upon the completion of each project.

 

Proposal Requirements

  1. Description of the course(s) or program to be the focus of the proposal.
  2. A list of goals and objectives to be accomplished.
  3. A description of the significance of the project for advancing student learning in the department and the University.
  4. The methods detailing how the stated goals and objectives will be accomplished.
  5. A description and time-line for planned activities.
  6. Expected results and how the results will be used.
  7. A description of the faculty and how they will be involved.
  8. This should indicate who has the principle responsibility for the grant. A budget indicating how grant monies will be used. Awards will be up to $500 for individual faculty and up to $4,000 for departments or programs.

Timeline:

·         March 31, 2000: Applications Due

·         April 2000: Applications reviewed by Assessment Advisory Committee & recommendations made to Provost

·         May 1, 2000 Awards announced by Provost at Learning-Assessment Conference.

·         2000 - 2001: Proposals implemented. Progress reports due to coordinator on November 15, 2000  and May 1, 2001.
