Practicum in Behavior Analysis
Fall 2007

Instructor:  Dr. Bruce E. Hesse

Class time and day:  Thursdays, 6-9pm. Class meets in Room 206 of Bizzini Hall

Class website: http://psyc.csustan.edu/bhesse/psy5930/

General Course Objectives:  In this practicum the student will apply the treatment methodology from the area of Psychology referred to as "Behavior Analysis". The student will be working in an actual community setting as an "employee". The purpose of this course is to provide the "real world" experience necessary for successful integration of academics with the demands of a typical job in the human services field. Treatment specifics, ethical concerns and legal requirements will be emphasized.

Course Format: Students applying for Practicum credit must be approved for practicum study by the Psychology Department faculty. Students must also be accepted by an agency as an intern/employee and be actively working within the setting during the semester. Those students not meeting these basic criteria will be dropped from the class list. Students should plan to average 10 work hours per week during the semester (a total of about 120 work hours with at least 75 direct client contact hours). All students are required to attend the weekly class supervision meetings. The class supervision meetings will have a didactic function. Students will  present cases they are working on at their practicum site, discuss the Behavior Analysis literature related to their treatment decisions and report outcomes. For the case presentations, students will be prepared to talk about their practicum clients at each meeting. The day to day supervision of the student's practicum site work will be provided at the practicum site. Students are expected to fulfill the job requirements of a regular employee of the facility.

Students are required to submit a log of their work hours and activities at the end of the semester (and bring a current version to class each week for review).  The supervisor of the student's work at the practicum site will evaluate the student and this evaluation will be used to determine the student's grade (in conjunction with class activities).
