| GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will be introduced to the day-to-day requirements of teaching with the objective of giving them experience working with a wide variety of individuals in a learning environment. This experience will make them more familiar with a particular subject area in Psychology, prepare them to teach in a doctoral program (should they choose to enter one) and assist in the development of good “people” skills with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds |
| PREREQUISITES: All students in this course MUST be graduate students admitted to the Masters program in Psychology at CSU, Stanislaus and have completed 9 units of graduate level courses. This means that you must have completed your BA and be admitted to the program. Students on postbac status may NOT enroll in this course. You must also have been accepted by a member of the Psychology faculty as a teaching assistant and be able to work at least 45 hours during the semester with this person |
| COURSE FORMAT: All students are expected to attend the group supervision meetings one-hour per week. The group supervision meetings will follow a discussion format. Students will talk about their weekly teaching activities with the other teaching apprentices and the course instructor. Academic issues related to teaching at the college level and readings from the assigned text or articles handed out in class will also be discussed. The student's teaching mentor will provide the day-to-day supervision of the student. Students will participate in the teaching of their teaching mentor's class. This will include giving a lecture, writing learning objectives and exam questions, grading, tutoring individual students and related tasks. |
